About Carolyn
Carolyn Clifford is a 22-time Emmy Award-winning journalist who anchors the 4, 6, and 11 pm newscasts. She was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in April 2024 and the Michigan Broadcasting Hall of Fame in September 2021. Carolyn has also received the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Broadcast Excellence Award for Best News Anchor in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
A Detroit native, Carolyn is one of ten children with nearly 60 nieces and nephews. She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and has been recognized for her work in mental toughness from the MSU Army ROTC.
Carolyn started at WXYZ as a weekend anchor and health reporter before joining "7 Action News This Morning" in May 2002. She later became the co-anchor of 7 Action News at 11 pm and shifted away from her health reporting role. She previously worked at WPGH-TV in Pittsburgh and WLFL-TV in Raleigh, NC, as well as CBS affiliates in Orlando and Lansing. Notable moments in her career include interviewing President Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson.
Carolyn is deeply involved in community service, including mentoring journalists, supporting domestic violence victims, and advocating for literacy and education. She has been honored by Northwood University and the Women Informal Network, and named "Woman of the Year" by the YWCA of Western Wayne County. Carolyn is also a board member for Accelerate 4 Kids and has contributed significantly to various nonprofits.
Originally aspiring to a Broadway career, Carolyn is a lifelong dancer and has performed with the Michigan State Dance Company. She often speaks at schools and community organizations, inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote on standing strong in times of challenge.
Married to Gregory F. Goss, Carolyn is a mother to five children and is actively involved in professional and community organizations, including the Society of Professional Journalists and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
